SUMMER PLANTING IN KINGS HEATH! - Sunday 27th May

DON'T FORGET!

SUMMER PLANTING IN KINGS HEATH!

Summer planting begins on Sunday the 27th May at 9.00 am at The Parade (opposite Argos). We will be replacing 5 ageing planters with planters of a new design.  Please bring gardening gloves, and trowels. Hi-viz Jackets will be provided. Some of the work will be quite hard and we will require some extra spades and brooms, if you can bring some along. Late-comers are welcome.

Afterwards we will retire to Loco Lounge for a complimentary drink. This is a great opportunity for local people to meet each other, get involved in the community and to contribute ideas about how to improve our neighbourhood.

If you can make it this Sunday please could you get in touch by email or phone (preferably text) to give an idea of numbers

This is what the In Bloom judges said about Kings Heath in 2011

'One can not fail to be impressed, from the richness of its two parks, the floral displays throughout, the vibrant businesses and retail outlets, its welcoming and well-used churches, and at its hub the incredible and awe inspiring community which is Kings Heath.'

Lets keep up the good work!

Kings Heath Library's roof is to be repaired!

Hello everyone

We have some fantastic news for you all. We are going to have our roof repaired!  All the skylights are being replaced and the flat roof recovered. This means that we will, once again, have natural light and no leaks! Unfortunately this will have a small impact on our service.

Kings Heath Library will be closed from Monday 25th June for approximately 3 weeks.

Also from Monday 11th June part of the main adult library will be closed for approximately 1 week to allow the replacement of a skylight.
During this period access to the PC's may be reduced. We will keep you informed of any changes.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work but we are sure you will agree it is worth it.

Please pass this onto everyone you know.

Best wishes

Kings Heath Library

Event for older people

Hello all, my name is Tony Davis and for the last 2 years I have worked for opnocs (older peoples new opportunities consortium). Previously I worked for BCC and Age Concern Birmingham. Opnocs is a charity that has been in existence for 10 years and acts as an umbrella organisation for individual members as well as various community groups in South Birmingham . I have attached a leaflet that explains the services we provide. In addition I have attached our latest newsletter that shows some of the events we have planned for the coming year. I would be willing to come along and talk to anyone that may be interested in what we do. In the meantime I have attached a flyer for our next event on May 24th at Highbury Hall. I would be most grateful if you could display this. Regards Tony ps. I shall be on leave from 7th - 21st May, however any enquiries can be sent to opnocs@stpaulstrust.org.uk

Meet our first Transition HelpXer: Anita

"Hi there! My name's Anita, I'm a traveller from Australia now living in the UK on a working holiday. I just recently got involved with Helpx - it's a great way to travel as it allows you to get to know local people and the places they live, rather than just seeing the usual tourist sites and skating over the surface of a place. Basically Helpx is an exchange; volunteers work for 4-6 hours a day in return for accommodation and food (although the specifics of agreements can vary).

I found Jonathan's description of King's Heath Transition on Helpx and applied to become involved as the projects sounded pioneering and interesting. I've always had an interest in the environmental field and sustainable living, and I enjoy meeting like-minded people.

I hope that I can be of some help to you all, and I look forward to meeting you :)"
Anita

Anita will be staying in Kings Heath for the next two weeks and is available to help members of our group with Transition-related projects.  If you've got a project you'd like her to help with, or can invite her over for dinner, please reply to this email and we'll put you in touch!

Can you lend your spare room to Transition?

Friends,

For the last few months, my parents have welcomed foreign guests into their home via an organisation called HelpX.  In return for free accommodation, the guests agree to work on a project for their host.  Many of the projects involve working on farms or growing food, but the project can be anything.

That got me thinking: what if we could host somebody who wanted to stay in Kings Heath and volunteer for our group?  Having somebody working 20+ hours a week on Transition projects could be a massive boost to so many of our ongoing projects - or could even be the kickstart needed to launch one of the projects from our wishlist into existence!

Would you be able to help make this a reality?  We'll need:
  • hosts - do you have a bedroom spare for a week or two?
  • mentors - would you be able to volunteer together with a HelpXer as your apprentice?
  • translators/proofreaders - are you able to translate, proofread or help foreign guests perfect their English?
  • friends - could you have a guest over for dinner, or take them out for a drink?
I think this could be such a massive boost for our group, let's make it happen! :)  Let me know if you can help, or if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Free report: Kings Heath's Energy Future - now available

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who came to the presentation of my new report, "Kings Heath's Energy Future: a neighbourhood energy plan".  The report includes:
  • how we can use energy more efficiently in our homes and businesses
  • ideas for sustainable mobility and food
  • the potential for producing clean, green renewable energy locally
Written in an accessible style with copious illustrations, it presents a broad overview of the local opportunities for transitioning to a sustainable community that anyone can relate to.  I hope it will inspire lots of discussion and future projects.

The report is now available for free download: http://tinyurl.com/KH-EnergyPlan (pdf, 68Mb)

Printed copies are also available, for a limited time only.  If you would like a hard copy of the report, send me your postal address and I'll post it to you shortly.

Cheers,

Jonathan
